As part of the bidding process for the organization of World Expo 2025 an Enquiry Mission from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) visited Yekaterinburg.
On 3 and 4 April, the BIE delegation received detailed presentations of the bid and held meetings with local officials, as well as representatives of the business community and members of civil society. In Moscow on 5 April, the delegation was received by President Putin, Prime Minister Medvedev and other high-ranked politicians.
The survey team highly rated Yekaterinburg’s bid to host the 2025 World Exposition. In their opinion, the Russian team demonstrated the ability to host this mega-event, which would also fit into country’s long-term development strategy. Russia’s positive experience in organizing the Olympic Games in Sochi and in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2018 were noted as well.
EXPO 2025 will take place from May to November 2025, and would bring to Yekaterinburg over 30 million visitors – an astonishing number.
Russia is ready to invest $ 2 billion in infrastructure and exhibition facilities, In fact, the construction of a whole new “smart city” district with 555 hectare area is envisioned, which Yekaterinburg will benefit from long after the event.
Yekaterinburg is competing with Osaka (Japan) and Baku (Azerbajdzjan). The BID decision will be announced in November 2018.
